Dear Jyotisha,

Here is some info on the various Jyotirlingam. This is followed by the Dwadas Jyotilingam Stotra. The use of Jyotirlingam can be manifold. Some of them are given below

The remedies associated with the Jyotirlingas
1। Lord Shiva can grant life to otherwise dying / decaying persons like he gave life to Sage Markandeya and also as a guru can elevate any debilitated/ fallen persons. In a horoscope if a planet is either “Debilitated” or in “Marana Sthana**”, the best possible remedy is to worship the Jyotirlingam associated with the sign of exaltation of the said planet. This shall help in canceling the weakness caused by Debilitation or Marana Avastha

** Marana Sthana: Sun in 12th, Moon in 8th, Mars in 7th, Mercury in 7th, Jupiter in 3rd, Venus in 6th, Saturn in 1st, Rahu in 9th.
2। The form of the Guru is shown by the placement of the Bhratri Karaka, in the Navamsa. One can worship the Jyotirlingam associated with the Rasi where the Bhratri Karaka is placed in the Navamsa sign and Shiva shall come as Guru to the Native.

3। Sun is the natural giver of Satya and Dharma. Whichever sign Sun is placed, one can worship the Jyotirloingam associated with the Sign for gains in Satya and Dharma.

4। As Narasimha Pointed out, the 5th lord in the Dasamsa is very crucial in the careers of the native and show opportunities in the job life of a native. Worshipping the Jyotirlingam which shall cause the exaltation of the 5th lord is good for the career of the native.

5। There can be other combinations… for any kind of weaknesses etc. find the causing planet and worship the Jyotirlingam to get over the weakness. The weakness can be one of the Shadripu. Guru helps us getting over such weaknesses of the body or mind.

6। The other specific remedies associated with the Jyotilingas are given under each of their brief description.

Information on Dwadas Jyotirlingas (Taken from the Notes of Jyotish Guru J. Sarat Chander)
1। Rameshwaram - Aries (Mesh)
This Jyotirlinga was established by Lord Rama। It is he who causes the exaltation of Sun. Also represents the Agni Tattwa among the 5 tattwas.

2। Somnath - Taurus (Vrishabh)
This Jyotirlinga was established by Lord Krishna. It is he who causes the exaltation of Moon. It will be interesting to note that Lord Krishna's lagna was Taurus, star was Rohini and Rasi (Moon sign) was also Taurus.

3। Nageshwara- Gemini (Mithun)

This Jyotirlinga shows that exaltation of Rahu (the snake).

4। Omkareshwar- Cancer (Kark)
This Jyotirlinga symbolizes Dakshinamoorthy and the very resplendent syllable 'Aum' (`) which is knowledge - knowledge of the self, and wisdom. These qualities are represented by Jupiter. It is he who causes the exaltation of Jupiter. Also represents the Jala Tattwa among the 5 tattwas.

5। Vaidyanatha- Leo (Simh)
This Jyotirlinga symbolizes the moolatrikona sign of Surya. It also symbolizes the natural 5th house - the house of children, intellect, mantra siddhi, mind etc.

6। Mallikarjuna - Virgo (Kanya)
It is he who causes Mercury's exaltation. It symbolizes Prithvi Tattwa which is one of the 5 elements. It also symbolizes strength from the Prithvi Tattwa (Solids).

7। Mahakaleshwara- Libra (Thula)
It is he who causes the exaltation of Saturn who is said to represent Mahakala. A prayer at this Jyotirlinga is bound to bless one with health and life as Shiva in the form of Mahakala (the one who takes away the Rudra) is pacified. Saturn is the Dharmaraja of a chart and its deity is Yama who never fails in his duty (dharma). This Jyotirlinga also symbolizes the Vayu Tattwa - the Tamasik of the 5 tattwas.

8। Dhooshaneshwara- Scorpio (Vrishchik)
This is the sign of dual lordship of Ketu and Mars. Ketu's lordship provides it the touch of uncertainty. This represents intermittent nature of working of this Rasi. A person influenced by Scorpio (Ketu) will be on and off the sphere of work very frequently.

9। Kasi Vishwanath- Sagittarius (Dhanu)
Jupiter as the overlord of Moksha rules this house and Ketu, as the Mokshakaraka, exalts in this house. Hence, the Jyotirlinga of Kasi Vishwanath is known to send the atma towards Moksha/Mukti. It also represents the power of the Jyotirlinga to bring to fore even the lost or hidden things, as symbolized by the Matsya Avatar (Ketu being the planet) in which Lord Vishnu recovered the lost Vedas. This is the sign in which golden temples are built and we have only 3 golden temples (Kasi Vishwanath, Tirupati Balaji and Har Mandir Sahib at Amritsar).

10। Bhimashankara- Capricorn (Makar)
This Jyotirlinga symbolizes the exaltation of Mars (Mrityu) and prayers at the Jyotirlinga of Bhimashankara indicates overcoming of Mrityu. As Capricorn is the sign of Saturn where Mars (Mrityu) exalts, Mahamrityunjaya Japa done during the dasa periods of Saturn is very effective and useful to overcome death itself or deathly blows.

11। Kedarnath- Aquarius (Kumbh)
The sign which is also owned by Rahu (poison). Rahu (as also Aquarius) symbolizes deep philosophy. Lord Shiva is believed to have given the Vedas, the highest philosophy, as ‘Kedarnath’.

12। Tryambakeswara- Pisces (Meen)
This is the sign of exaltation of Venus, the planet with the power to give rebirth - the possessor of Sanjeevani Mantra (Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra)। This is the sign of cures to the physical body. This is also the sign of abode of Maha Vishnu in his Anantasayana.

Rules for predict publishing book

Re: rules for predict publishing book
[From Vedic Astrology Yahoo group]

Dear Marie-Christine,

Writing books is a social activity related to knowledge. Activities
in society are seen in D-10 (Dasamsa). Activities related to
knowledge and intellectual evolution are seen in D-24 (Siddhamsa).
Primarily look at those two charts (esp D-24).

The 3rd house shows one's communication skills. However,
communication skills are something that are internal to a person.
They live inside a person and cannot be seen by others. The way they
rise and manifest in the world and can be seen by others is through
the articles, books, lectures etc authored by one. While houses show
things that live inside a person, arudhas (arudha = risen one) show
how those matters rise/manifest in the world and seen by others.

So the most important factor for seeing books authored by a native is
A3 (arudha of 3rd house). Look at planetary placements w.r.t A3 and
influences on A3 in the charts of authors of fine knowledge and
you'll see a pattern.

Argalas on A3 show decisive influences on one's books. Sun shows
authoritative style and knowledge and wisdom received from elders.
Moon shows a nice and pleasant style. Mars shows logical precision.
Mercury shows a light-hearted approach. Jupiter shows wisdom and
respect for tradition. Venus shows an imaginative style and a smooth
flow. Saturn shows attention to detail and a laborious style. Rahu
and Ketu show unorthodox approach, innovation and a laborious style.

Example 1: Take Pt. Sanjay Rath, author of highly acclaimed books -
Jaimini Sutras, COVA and Vedic Remedies.

Date: August 7, 1963
Time: 21:14:50
Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)
Longitude: 83 E 58' 00"
Latitude: 21 N 27' 00"

His D-24 has A3 is Sc. Malefics in the 6th from A3, Jupiter in the
5th, benefics in 8th are well-placed from A3. Sun and Moon are in Sc
in A3 and dharma-karmadhipati yoga (9th and 10th lords together)
w.r.t. A3 makes it very powerful. Pt. Sanjay Rath has been running
Scorpio's D-24 Narayana dasa since 1997. No wonder he is writing many
good books.

Jupiter's unobstructed argala on A3 is a key factor. That's why he is
writing in astrology. Sun in A3 and Jupiter's argala on A3 show that
the knowledge he is giving comes from a bonafide parampara.

Example 2: I am at office right now and don't have any other charts
like Dr. Raman, K.N. Rao, P.S. Sastry etc. I remember Sanjay's
birthdata and mine. So let us take myself as the second example.

Date: April 4, 1970
Time: 17:48:20
Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)
Longitude: 81 E 12' 00"
Latitude: 16 N 15' 00"

D-24 has A3 in Sc like Sanjay. A3 has Jupiter's unobstructed argala
from Pi in this D-24 too. Sun is in A3. Results are both are akin to
Sanjay. Venusian argala on A3 gives a free flow and an imaginative
style, but this argala is obstructed by Saturn. So the free flow is
may sometimes be hampered by too much laboring with details.
Unobstructed argala of nodes on A3 shows an innovative style of
writing.

I am also running Scorpio's D-24 Narayana dasa like Sanjay. With Sc
containing A3, I published a book recently. I run this dasa from 2000
to 2010. God willing, I may write more books.

I hope it gives you some idea of how to see one's books. Some people
ignore arudhas, argalas etc and suggest that these are advanced
concepts. But the fact is that these are all basics. If the basics
are mastered, Vedic astrology is a very systematic and logical
subject. If one skips these basics, one has to beat around the bush
often and it can be frustrating. I strongly suggest reading my
book "Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach" and mastering the
basic building blocks. JHLite (free Jyotish software written by me
for Windows computers) gives all arudhas in all vargas.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,
Narasimha

Mantra Devta

RE: [vedic-astrology] Re: Mantra Devta
Dear Mishraji, If I may join the thread: Both mantras are used. The one without using the pranava is the Panchakshari Shiva Mantra and the one with the pranava is the Shadakshari Shiva Mantra. Please see below Example number 2 for its explanation.
(a) Counting mantras in the horoscope
i. Count the number of words in the mantra. Assign the corresponding number of bhävas as Point A.
ii. Count the number of akñaras in the mantra. Assign the corresponding number of bhävas as Point B.
iii. Count the number of bhävas from point A to point B.
iv. Count that many bhävas from B and mark that Point C.
v. Point A is from where the energy of the mantra is taken.
vi. Point B is where the energy of the mantra is invested.
vii. Point C is where the Mantra Devatä sits.
viii. The number of words in the mantra indicates the number of mälä to be chanted.
Examples
1. Om namo bhagavate väsudeväya
Number of words: 4
Number of akñaras: 12
Seat of the Mantra Devatä: 8th house
Number of mälä: 4
The energy of the mantra is drawn from the 4th house, the hådaya of the devotee, and is invested in the 12th house, which is the paramam padam of Viñëu. Hence dvädaçäkñaré mantras are very sätvik, as the energy from all such mantras are offered at the feet of Viñëu, the 12th house representing the feet in the natural zodiac. The Mantra Devatä sits in the 8th house, cleansing our sins accumulated from our past births due to nija doña, for till the sins are burned one cannot embark on the mokña märga. Who else but Viñëu can burn our sins? The mantra spans the mokña trikoëa, indicating that dvädaçäkñaré mantras are aimed towards mokña.
2. Om namaù çiväya
Number of words: 3
Number of akñaras: 6
Seat of the Mantra Devatä: 9th house
Number of mälä: 3
The strength of the 3rd house is used to cleanse the ñaòripus represented in the 6th house. This cleansing is important before one can embark upon the path of dharma, which is the 9th house, the seat of the Mantra Devatä. It is Çiva alone who has the capacity to drink the poison of his devotees and digest it, and that is why he is known as Hara (one who removes sins), Nélakaëöha, the Blue-Throated One, blue because he has drunk the poison of the ripus of his devotees so that they can proceed on the dharma märga.
3. Namah Çiväya
Number of words: 2
Number of akñaras: 5
Seat of the Mantra Devatä: 8th House
Number of mälä: 2
The energy for this mantra is drawn from the 2nd house, the väca sthäna. All that is spoken, seen and eaten is transformed into knowledge in the 5th house. This knowledge is crucial for negating the ignorance accumulated over one’s past births, embedded in the 8th house. This ignorance is that of satya, of not realizing the truth, which can only come from the light of gyäna that shines through the 5th house of the natural zodiac. This gyäna is nothing but Brahmagyäna and none other than Çiva can bless us with this knowledge. Hence the païcäkñaré mantra of Çiva bestows knowledge and siddhi.
Best regards,
Sarbani

Respected Sanjay Rath Ji,
Pranaam,
Thanks for sparing your valuable time for me. Now I could get the concept of approaching the appropriate houses where mantra devta should sit and to strengthen that house mantra jaap should be done. We should bear in mind that jaap should be done with the accurate syallables. But , while giving example of" Namah Shivaaya" mantra ,you have omitted the word "Om".
This ommission is necessary or om is not prefixed namah shivaaya.
However we shall meet next Sunday till then Pranaam.

Sanjay Rath wrote:
Jaya Jagannatha
Dear Ramesh Mishra ji
Namaste
The mantra you state is the most famous Narayana astakshari. Astakshari means eight akshara.
Example -1:
om na-mo naa-raa-ya-Naa-ya
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 = 8 akshara [Akshara = energy inflow, final result] = 8th house
1 2 3 = 3 words [Words = energy outflow, start of count] = 3rd house
Now count from 3rd house to 8th house, we get 6 houses
Now count as many houses from the 8th house. In this example we got 6 houses, so when we count six houses from 8th house, we get Lagna as the answer.
Final result = Naarayana is in LAGNA.
So the mantra devata Narayana sits in lagna and the recitation of this mantra gives good health, protection from all evils, long life and clear intellect. It is the greatest mantra for lagna suddhi and is one of the three mantras of the Narayana Kavacha. The greatest strength of this mantra is that it removes all kinds of nija dosha indicated by the 8th house or 8th lord and makes the lagna very strong.
Now study the dhyana or the meditation of the mantra devata. It starts as 'dhyaye sadaa savitrimandala madhyavarti Naaraayana..' and the reference is to the Sun which is the significator of Lagna and that Naraayana is in the centre of the solar orb.
The best mantras of the devatas always fall in the correct houses indicated for them. Then such mantra are called Prasiddha mantra and such mantra can only be originally given by the seers as they alone had such great sight and knowledge.
Example -2:
na-mah shi-vaa-ya
1 2 3 4 5 = 5 akshara = 5th house
1 2 = 2 words = 2nd house
Count from 2nd house to 5th house, we get 4 houses
Now count 4 houses from 5th house and we get 8th house. This is the house of Rudra and the panchakshari mantra has the power to give great knowledge as it cleanses the fifth house and finally this causes protection from all evils of 8th house where Shiva sits to protect you and grant longevity.
In this manner study the following
1. Surya astakshari
om ghri-ni suu-ry-aa-di-tya
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 = 8 akshara
1 2 3 = 3 words
Mantra devata = 1st house (Lagna)
What happens when this is pronounced differently by breaking surya and aaditya
om ghri-ni suu-rya aa-di-tya
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8= 8 akshara
1 2 3 4 = 4 words
Mantra devata = 12th house in marana karaka sthana
See the change how the position of the mantra devata changes from Lagna to the 12th house which is the marana karaka sthana for Sun.
Thus while reciting the mantra if the words are not spelt jointly as indicated it can do a lot of harm.
Exercise
1. om namo bhagavate vaasudevaaya
2. om namah shivaaya
3. om kshraum namo bhagavate narasimhaaya
4. om bhur namo bhagavate vyankateshaaya
5. brm brhaspataye namah
6. om namo bhagavate rudraaya
7. om namo bhagavate mahaamatsyaaya
8. gajamukha siddhirastu
9. hare raama krsNa
10. om hrim shrim krim paramesvari kaalike svaahaa
11. om namo bhagavate akuparaaya
12. vyam vedavyaasaaya namah
...just a start. I will give more exercise when we meet next sunday and explain from charts how to choose.
With best wishes and warm regards,
Sanjay Rath

II Om Namo Narayanaaya II
Respected Sanjay Rath Ji, and Sarbani Ji,
Pranaam,
I attended your lectures on the abovementioned topic delivered by you on March 20, 2005. I could not have a clear concept on Mantra Devta. It is therefore requested that kindly spare few minutes for me and for list members as well to clarify the doubts.
Mantra devta resides in the 4th house and the chosen mantra should be started from 4th house only .Is it correct ?
Take for example I have selected a mantra viz".OM NAMO NARAYANAAYA ".
This mantra has 3 words and 9 characters. If I start from 4th house then I have to go forward 3 houses away from fourth i.e.6th house and then again nine houses away from sixth house which comes to second house.Or,
Should I start from 3rd house because this mantra has three words and go three houses away from 3rd house i.e.5th house and then nine houses away from 5th house i.e. Lagna.By choosing either of the method what is the result in respect of second house or lagna.
While thinking about the selection of devta I am stuck up here regarding selection of the appropriate mantra. Please spare for me to make it clear concept with example.
Thanks and Pranaam,
Ramesh Mishra

Mrityunjaya Mantra

"SRath "
SRath wrote:

JAYA JAGANNATH

Dear Gautam,

The Mahamrutunjaya Mantra Reads: OM TRYAMBAKKAM YAJAMAHE SUGANDHIM PUSTIVARDHANAM URVAROOKAMEVA BANDANAAN MRITYORMOKSHEEYA MAAMRITAAT.

OM is not given in the Rig Veda, but has to be added to the begining of all Mantras as given in an earlier Mantra of the Rig Veda addressed to Ganapati. This Mantra is given in the Prayer page of my Book Maharishi Jaimini's Upadesa Sutra.

TRYAMBAKKAM refers to the Three eyes of Lord Sadashiva. Trya means Three and Ambakam means eyes. These three eyes or sources of enlightenment are the Trimurti Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and the three 'AMBA' (also meaning Mother or Shakti' are Saraswati, Lakshmi and Gouri. Thus in this word, we are referring to God as Omniscient (Brahma), Omnipresent (Vishnu) and Omnipotent (Shiva). This is the vision of Brihaspati and is referred to as Sri Duttatreya having three heads of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

YAJAMAHE means We sing Thy praise.

SUGANDHIM refers to His fragrance (of knowledge , presence and strength..three aspects) as being the best and always spreading around. Gautamji has interpreted this very correctly as: Sugandhim (Prasarit Punya Kirtim, that is Whose virtuous deeds are spread to all four sides)

PUSTIVARDHANAM: Pooshanam refers to Him as the sustainer of this world and in this manner, He is the Father of all. Gautamji has given an excellent interpretation as seed of the World. Gautamji wrote:- Pustivardhanam ( Seed of the world, one who increases the number of worshippers or one who increases the Shakti or power such as Anima, Garima etc.)

URVAAROKAMEVA (The catch is here) 'URVA' means "VISHAL" or big and powerful or deadly.. 'AAROOKAM' means 'Disease'. Thus URVAROOKA means deadly and overpowering diseases. (The CUCUMBER interpretation is also correct for the word URVAROOKAM, but not apt for this mantra). The diseases are also of three kinds caused by the influence (in the negative) of the three Guna's and are ignorance (Avidya etc), falsehood (Asat etc as even though Vishnu is everywhere, we fail to perceive Him and are guided by our sight and other senses) and weaknesses (Shadripu etc. a constraint of this physical body and Shiva is all powerful).

BANDANAAM means bound down. Thus read with URVAROOKAMEVA, it means 'I am bound down by deadly and overpowering diseases'

MRITYORMOOKSHEYA means to deliver us from death (both premature death in this Physical world and from the neverending cycle of deaths due to re-birth) for the sake of Mokshya (Nirvana or final emancipation from re-birth)

MAAMRITAAT means 'please give me some Amritam (life rejuvinating nectar). Read with the previous word, it means that we are praying for some 'Amrit' to get out of the death inflicting diseases as well as the cycle of re-birth.

Hare Krishna,
Sanjay Rath

Navadurga and Dasa Mahavidya

Jaya Jagannath Dear Freedom,

When I read you mail on the Nava durga, I recollected something which Gurudev told me long back. He was saying that the tithi in which one is born has a very specific significance in the the life of the native. Being the child of both the lumineries, it is store house of knowledge. Recently we found out how to find the Jyotirlingam based on the tithi.

There is a way we can find the mother form from the tithi too. For the Krsna Paksha, the Dasa Mahavidya form is predominant and for the Sukla Paksha, the Durga form is predominant. Just take the lord of the tithi worship the mother form, based on the paksha.

So for Krsna Paksha Birth the form of the mother is
Sun- Matangi
Moon- Bhubaneswari
Mars- Bagalamukhi
Merc- Tripurasundari
Jup- Tara
Ven- Kamalatmika
Sat- Kalika
Rahu- Chinnamasta
Ketu- Dhoomavati

For Sukla Paksha, the forms are as you mentioned

Sun-Shailyaputri (daughter of the Mountains)
Moon- Mahagauri
Mars- Skandamata
Mercury- Katyayani
Jupiter- Brahmacharini
Venus- Kushmandi
Saturn- Kalaratri
Rahu- Chandraganta (bell of the Moon)
Ketu- Siddhidatri (giver of siddhis)

I am born in Sukla Navami and hence I shall worship Shailyaputri.

Best Wishes
Sarajit

Hare Rama Krsna

They are Kali rupas from the point of view of Bhu shakti, Sri shakti, and Nila (kali) Shaktis. Look at Sanjay’s foundations of Vedic astrology.
All 33 crore devattas can be divided into 33, which can be divided into the 3 functions of Brahma, Shiva, and Visnu.

You can research the nav durga on the net but the only place I know of then is from the “Devi Mahatmya”, the text itself and the kavach before it. I have about 6 translations of the text so it is available in the US. There are mantras for all of the Devis in the “Mantra Mahaarnava”, if you get a translated copy of that let me knowJ

Kali Mahavidya is the rupa which removes the negativity of Shani. All the Mahavidyas are Kali Shakti Rupas removing the negativity of different planets and houses, Kali Devi is one of the Mahavidyas as well, and there are a multitude of forms for that form of Kali Devi, like Chandi and Chamunda to name the popular ones. Be prepared for different traditions to tell you different views. The Hindu pantheon is a multidimensional matrix, it is not a linear family tree.

Dear Freedom,

Thanks for giving the Nava Durga forms, I never read about them before. Can I ask where you learned about them or how I can read more. I also never knew that the das Mahavidya were all kali rupa, did I understand that correctly? I naturally just thought that that just Saturn was Kali.

For those interested, I'm listing the forms of Lakshmi as given in Narayan's paper that he presented at the 2003 conference in Edison. Hopefully the paper and recording of the conference wil lbe coming out soon.

Maha Lakshmi and her 8 rupa forms

Sun: Dhanya Lakshmi
Moon: Dhana Lakshmi
Mars:Dhaara Lakshmi
Mercury:Vidya Lakshmi
Venus: Maha Lakshmi
Jupiter: Santaana Lakshmi
Saturn:Adi Lakshmi
Rahu: Vijaya Lakshmi
Kutu:Gaja Lakshmi

I'd like to also like to post the list of Devi associated wit the Vishnu avatars that Sanjay-ji mentioned in the 2002 conference, but I'll have to review them first.

Thanks again Freedom

Best Regards,
Karen

Hare Rama Krsna

You also have the Navadurgas:Sun-Shaylaputra (daughter of the Mountains)Moon- MahagauriMars- SkandamataMercury- KatyayaniJupiter- Brahmacharini
Venus- Kushmandi
Saturn- KalaratriRahu- Chandraganta (bell of the Moon)Ketu- Siddhidatri (giver of siddhis)

And there is a list of the different Rupas of Laksmi, I know Narayan Iyer talked about them in one of his lectures at the 2003 East Coast conferences. We should get him to upload them.

The Mahavidyas (Kali Rupas) should only be used if you know what you are doing with them, otherwise it is better to use a Laxsmi or Durga Rupa. As The Kali rupas can destroy significations, they are generally used to remove negative effects of planets not normally for the supportive Palana devata.

The Palana devata is the deity that will provide for your material needs in this life. Like a mother She will see to it that you have food, home, resources etc.
